Although the country is famed for its top quality meat, today Argentina is one of the world’s leading producer’s of soy beans.

Location
1. In Argentina, soybeans are grown in the Northern expanses, most notably in the province of Sante Fe, which accounts for 40 percent of the country’s total production. Soybeans are also grown in Cordoba.
History
2. In the last 30 yearsm soybean production in Argentina has grown from .01 million to more than 14 million hectares. The collapse of the country’s economy and the devaluing of the peso, helped to push the exportation of GM soybeans and between 1991 and 2002, 569 trial fields were opened for the planting of GM soya and other products.
Production
3. Argentina produces some 17,547 TMT of soybeans per year; it is the world’s third largest soybean producer.
Considerations
4. The growing trade in soybeans has meant that Argentina’s cattle industry has suffered; as the price of soya increased, farmers abandoned their beef cattle and began to grow soya.
Consequences
5. This in turn has created problems as Argentina’s reliance on a largely single crop leaves it vulnerable; communities have been displaced to make room for the crops and the country isn’t producing as much food for its own people.
