Founded in 1937, Glacier National Park, or Los Glaciers National Park, is located in the southwestern segment of the Santa Cruz region of the Argentinean Patagonia. Known for its breathtaking beauty and scientific value due to its endangered species and unique geography, the 600,000-hectare region is a desirable destination all year round. In an affirmation of its geographic value, UNESCO declared the park a Natural Heritage of Humanity in 1981.
Within the park, you’ll find a strikingly broad range of geographical features, each of which is important to scientists today. The area, approximately 30% of which is covered by ice, is commonly divided into two sections defined by the duo of large lakes that are partially contained by the park. Lago Viedma blankets the northern region of the park, while Lago Argentino (the largest lake in Argentina) defines the southern region. Both lakes feed into the Santa Cruz River, which drains directly into the neighboring Atlantic Ocean.
