Many tourists to New York are are happy to drift from one must-see attraction to another, attractions such as the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, and the Rockefeller Center. These are great attractions, but seeing just because they are must-see attractions is a waste of valuable vacation time. These attractions are typically very crowded and they cater to tourists with over-priced souvenirs and refreshments.
If you’re tired of fighting crowds on vacation, remember, most New York tourist attractions are in Manhattan. If you’re looking for the real New York, head to the outer boroughs. Brooklyn is known for it’s beaches and Coney Island. A Coney Island hot dog is considered a delicacy to New Yorkers. Queens, home to the international airports, is very diverse.
In addition to having a large Chinatown, there are many ethic restaurants worth exploring. The Bronx is home to both the Bronx Zoo and the New York Botanical Gardens. Staten Island is home to the free Staten Island Ferry, where terrific views of the Statue of Liberty are present. A ferry ride is the perfect way to spend an evening in the real New York. You may choose to stay in a posh Manhattan hotel, but seeing the outer boroughs is like seeing four other major cities.
London is a huge city, just as New York is, but it’s still possible to find some non-touristy entertainment and attractions. Still, while you’re looking for the non-tourist attractions, it’s hard to resist a visit to Buckingham Palace, the official London residence of the Queen. It’s really a must-see sight even if you don’t go in.
London has always been a place to find new alternative music, the city has launched many alternative rock and punk bands. To get a taste of the real London, get a local newspaper and look for bars and other venues offering music. Be sure to get the local papers from a news stand, not the tourist brochure rack in the hotel. You’ll avoid the crowds and discover some hidden gems and possibly hear the next hottest band instead of visiting the normal tourist bars and nightclubs.
