El Camino de Santiago is a major pilgrimage routes around the world. Tours depart from all over Europe with the final destination of Santiago de Compostela, and here we’ll tell you what paths that start in the Portuguese zone.
Currently Lusitanian depart from the country two different routes, one from the inside and the other from the area of the coast:
In the first case, the pilgrimage begins in Faro and covers various towns and cities that stand between Evora, Vila Real, Chaves, Verin, Ourense and Lalin, and finally to Santiago.
The second route begins in Lisbon and Santarém passes, Golega, Coimbra, Porto, Vila do Conde, Rates, Barcelos, Tui, Porrino, Vigo, Redondela, Pontevedra and Register up to destination.
Along both routes can be seen cities where various historical monuments were erected, mostly linked to the religious aspect. In Portugal can be found in the Gothic architectural wonders that are located in Santarém and Golega, or the spectacular cathedrals and medieval buildings of Coimbra, among many other spectacular sites.
Discover extremely relevant for the tour are: Ponte das Febres, Ponte de Sampaio, the Cournicova, Ulla Bridge, Padrón, Rúa de Francs, Sierra de Labruja, Pontevedra Porrino and Mos.
All these sites are characterized by distinctive historical features. For example, in Ponte de Sampaio was the defeat of Marshal Ney during the War of Independence. In Ulla Bridge, meanwhile, were built towers Viking slowed progress.
In Rua de Francos you can see the former residence of Queen Lupa, while in Pontevedra are pampered compared to the huge palaces, temples and monasteries that remain standing for hundreds of years.
