Brisbane’s Best Attractions

Brisbane is the capital of Queensland and home to more than 2 million inhabitants.  This also makes it the third biggest city in Australia, after Sydney and Melbourne.  As you might expect from a city of this magnitude, there is plenty to do on a visit to Brisbane, with activities ranging from the relaxed to the adrenalin-fuelled.  Although it is a difficult task, this list attempts to highlight just a few of Brisbane’s best attractions.

Brisbane River

Brisbane takes its name from this river, which is named after Sir Thomas Brisbane, a former Governor of New South Wales.  Brisbane is also known as ‘The River City’, revealing the river’s importance in the city’s heritage.  For an unforgettable experience, try the night kayaking tour, which departs from Kangaroo Point.  This fantastic tour allows you to view the city in all its glory, with the lights of the CBD reflected in the water as you coast past. If you don’t particularly fancy facing the river al fresco, you can also take the City Cat ferry, which leaves from North Quay at regular intervals.  There are plenty of stops along the way, so you can hop off if you like the look of the City Beach or the Botanic Gardens.

Suncorp Stadium

For a real taste of Brisbane’s famous sporting culture, take in a rugby union match the Suncorp Stadium, particularly if the All Blacks are in town to take on the Wallabies.  The stadium has a capacity of 50,000 people, and can really work up a passionate atmosphere.  Moreover, the Suncorp Stadium is within walking distance of the Brisbane CBD – an increasing rarity for major sports grounds.  Nevertheless, transport links to the stadium are very well organised, so you can easily catch one of the many buses back to town after the game.

Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary

The Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary is one of the best places in Australia to get up close and personal with koalas and kangaroos.  This sanctuary is the antithesis of the modern zoo, as it is very intimate and allows interaction with the animals.  As the name of the sanctuary suggest, the koalas are the stars of the show here, and it is a wonderful place to get a look at these cuddly critters.  Nevertheless, visitors can also feed the kangaroos, and there are many emus and lorikeets to keep the whole family entertained. Without doubt, this is one of Queensland’s premier attractions.

Of course, there is a wide range of Brisbane attractions that deserved to make the cut for this list, and you will surely find some personal favourites throughout a trip to this city.  You can make the most of great velocity card rewards while you are in Brisbane.  For each purchase you make with a travel card you may be able to save rewards points to redeem on future flights to many locations worldwide.
